This Monday began the way so many others have: sleep-deprived and irritable. Last night was yet another battle in the long-standing war between my partner James’s need for background noise and my sensory sensitivities. The television glowed faintly, casting restless shadows across the room. The static screensaver flickered like strobe lights behind my eyelids, while the sharp clicks of the remote buttons felt like tiny hammers tapping relentlessly at my eardrums.
I’ve tried to explain how deeply these disruptions affect me—how they seem to reverberate through my nervous system, amplifying a discomfort that feels almost unbearable. But James, for all his kindness and love, doesn’t fully grasp what it’s like to experience the world through my neurodivergent lens. He experiences life differently, and his habits remain. He isn’t malicious; he simply doesn’t know.
