Hello, Done is an autoethnobiography—a raw, recursive, and intimate account written during the transformative process of discovering my autism.
I went to an AA meeting this afternoon—not for spiritual enlightenment or emotional release, but for slightly more petty reasons. James has been talking a lot about a new girl at meetings lately. She's being sponsored by Marilyn, my sponsor. I felt a pang of protectiveness… maybe even jealousy. I wanted to see who this girl was. I also wanted to give a well-practiced side eye to the older man people have been whispering about—the one rumored to be predatory. I’ve had my own experiences with him, and I came prepared to send a message without words.
The meeting itself was underwhelming. I found myself disengaged, drifting in and out as people shared the same recycled stories—lost, broken, alcoholic, saved by the Big Book. Wash, rinse, repeat. The speakers blended into one another like echoes of a script we’ve all heard before. There was no soul, no curiosity, no nuance. Just recitation.
